Understanding Slot Machines "Then and Now"

Slot games are the world's most popular form of casino gambling, and knowing how to win in slots can be one of the most important things a gambler ever learns. While today's slot machines have little in common with the original Liberty Bell designed by Charles Fey in 1896, their shape, size and popularity certainly do.

Slot machines were first introduced as entertainment devices for bars and cigar shops. The machines featured three spinning reels with ten symbols on each. The probability of winning on the old machines is easy to calculate. They offered 1000 combinations and paid out 750 total prizes, so the house won 250 pieces for every 1000 spins (on average, of course). Without taking the machines apart, using grooves or drilling the machine cab to insert wires and stop the reels, the machines could not be beaten regularly.

Popularity of slot machines

Over the years, the popularity of slot machines has grown, even if the player has given up 25 per cent. When Nevada casino business were the only state to legalise gambling (from 1931), small casinos such as the Harold's Club in Reno had only a few slots. However, slot machines soon underwent innovative changes, such as adding a fourth reel for larger jackpots or combining two slots or two reel sets. This improved their popularity somewhat, but the slots' odds or "return" rarely rose above 85% and the player still lost at least 15% of his hard-earned dollars.

In the 1980s, automated computers entered the computer age, along with the random number generator. An RNG is a computing device designed to generate a series or sequence of numbers or symbols that lack a pattern and are therefore random.

The first patent for such a device was granted to Inge Telnaes in 1984. He sold the patent to the IGT manufacturer of the jack, which allowed new video jacks to offer huge jackpots. Instead of a physical reel machine with a limited number of symbols or "stops" on each reel, video slots can offer as many as hundreds of symbols or stops on each reel, which can increase the odds of hitting the top jackpot to over 100 million apiece.

This provides more excitement and bigger payout types for the player. However, it is now impossible for a casual player to determine the odds of such a jackpot.

Winning

Since any form of gambling is controlled by chance, there are no guarantees inside any casino. However, there are a few things you can do to improve your chances of winning at slot machines. The first thing to remember is that every slot machine has its own list of payments and rules.

Newer slots have a 'menu' or 'game information' button that will indicate the attributes you need to win. Don't forget this step! Read the information and make sure you meet the requirements to win.

The biggest mistake made by slot players was not having the maximum coins in play. The maximum jackpot cannot be won if you do not have the maximum number of coins in play. Unfortunately, not everyone has unlimited bankroll. So, always make sure you can play the bonus screen or make a good profit. If you're not sure, ask the time board to help you correct your payouts!

Another common mistake that players make is that the machine is "forced" to hit. Sorry, this is incorrect. Especially on multi-coin, multi-line machines, this idea can cost you a small fortune. Only play when you are having fun. The next spin reward may be paid, or there will be no next 20 spins!

Slot psychology

Slot machine manufacturers use psychology to determine the percentages of a winning combination. That's why manufacturers such as Konami have come up with a number of linked games with bonus screens. And they know that players need payouts low enough to get instant gratification and payouts high enough to keep them interested.

For example, a popular bitcoin casino software slot machine might have 12 possible payouts ranging from 1 to 1, up to 2000. Let's say it's a dollar machine and requires three coins to match a payout of $2,000. This payout can only occur after 250 000 spins. In contrast, the 1 to 1 payout occurs every eight games. This will keep you interested but not excited.

Other small payouts can range from once every 20 times to once every 500 games. However, a good payout of 80-1 can be set to pay out more frequently. It can hit after 200 plays (on average, of course). This is often high enough to be very exciting, but just low enough to keep the player from stopping and trying another machine.

As a result, some players take advantage of the moderate payout frequency and move on to a new machine after reaching that point. This works for them because average shooters are exploited regularly to enjoy themselves, and when they get a reward of 80-1 or similar, they know that it won't be long before they give up and move on to the next machine. Generally speaking, you'll still have the same chance of hitting the top jackpots if you play the maximum number of coins, regardless of how often you move.

Although some slots offer a 98% chance of hitting the jackpot. This percentage is similar to video poker machines, although the great games from some video poker machines can actually give the player a slight edge over the casino, especially when player club comps are involved.
